The Filipino word halik (kiss) is related to the word halika (come). They are both offshoots of the ancient Indo-European word, “al-lik” which also brought us the word electrum (amber) which is named for its ability to attract wool and hair and other light things when rubbed. Over the ages, men have discovered more about the physical world. Ultimately, this property was called static electricity.
Curiously, “al-lik” survived in the Semitic-Arabian branch of language through the word “al-kohl” or alcohol. The substance was named for its property for making people attractive.
