The President Sings Pop!

Rock Noynoy Rock!

Earlier this day, looking at today’s popularity of President Noynoy Aquino that increased further from when he was proclaimed elected by the majority of voters, I can’t help thinking about the US President Barack Obama. I mean, the two have very many similarities, including their appeal to today’s youth and their perceived savvy of pop culture.

In a way, this marketing technique helped establish the peoples’ perception of these two presidents that they are “one of us.” A very distinctive name? Check. A very genre savvy media queen for a sister? Check. A love for jeans and pretty girlfriends? Check. As I posited with Don Dee in mungoconspiracy, he’ll be great in a beer commercial. Never mind that he did rap. He sang “Estudyante Blues” (composed by Jason Ivler’s uncle) tonight.

About Estudyante Blues, I’d like to share my reflections on the hearsay that it is Noynoy’s favorite song (I’d prefer if he sang “Fly Me to the Moon” as Gabby Concepcion did earlier). Seeing that he is now the Bachelor President, it fits well with him. But as the lyrics show, disturbingly well:

I

Kapag nangangatwiran
Ako’y pagagalitan
‘Di ko alam ang gagawin

Ako’y sunud-sunuran
Ayaw man lang pakinggan
Nasasaktan ang damdamin
(Ganyan talaga ang president. Andaming critixzes.)

REFRAIN
Ako’y walang kalayaan
Sunod sa utos lamang
(This is the type of president I want this country to have.)

II
(Noynoy the president’s daily life)
Paggaling sa eskwela
Diretso na ng bahay
Wala naman akong aabutan

Wala doon si Nanay
Wala doon si Tatay
Katulong ang naghihintay

Tatawag ang barkada
Sa kanila’y sasama
Lagot na naman paglarga

At ‘pag nangangatwiran
Ako’y pagagalitan
‘Di ko alam ang gagawin

[Repeat REFRAIN]
[Repeat I]
[Repeat REFRAIN]

Ako ang nakikita
Ako ang nasisisi
Ako ang laging may kasalanan
